Los Cabos’ Hacienda Encantada

Jetting off south of the border for my Mexican vacation was just what the doctor ordered. I booked one week at the gorgeous Hacienda Encantada Resort and Spa, located on the top of a cliff on the Baja Peninsula. Hacienda Encantada offers magnificent sea views from nearly every suite on the property. In fact, one can see all the way out to Land’s End.

The resort is an oasis away from the bachelor party atmosphere of Cabo San Lucas corridor with all of its bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops. It’s ideally situated between both Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos, in a picturesque desert meets sea meets luxury location. The resort’s sense of exclusivity and intimacy is evident upon entering the gated tree-lined desert entry way. All of the  rooms are suites – meaning that you get spacious living areas, a kitchen, full bathroom with a jacuzzi tub, and on-site amenities such as a spa, restaurants, infinity pools, kids zone, and valet service.

Whether you want a romantic dinner at Las Marias overlooking the sea, or want to host a wedding at the top of the cliff, or merely enjoy drinks at sunset near the pool, you feel as if you are just one of few at this beautiful property. What I like most about Hacienda Encantada is that is family operated, and the interior designer (also a family member) painstakingly achieves the goal of combining Mexican flair with a grand sense of luxury. Not only is this evident in the design of the suites, but also in the brand new villas that are being built, The Residences. The property does a fantastic job of making every section colorful yet tasteful.

During my stay, I enjoyed everything the resort had to offer, including a morning horseback ride through the property’s desert terrain. The cowboy took us along a nice trot and my horse cooperated with all of my commands. I felt like a regular cowgirl! I also enjoyed a two-hour pampering session at the spa. The spa concierge escorted me to the ladies’ changing room, complete with natural body products, a bath robe, slippers, and locker. I slipped into my robe and set off to enjoy the Anti-Jet Lag Body and Eye Rescue Arrival signature treatment that infused a hot stone and shiatsu massage and eye treatment, just perfect for jet-lag recovery. You can decide to have your treatment inside a suite or under the balmy trees on the spa patio.

While you cannot enjoy the beaches at the property because they are rocky and not very safe to enter, you can go to one of the nearby beaches just a 5-minute drive away, or have a taste of what the sea has to offer through the cuisine! Hacienda Encantada’s restaurants strive to incorporate the local Mexican flavor and fresh seafood from the peninsula. I had a chance to meet both the Marketing Director and Executive Chef, who took me on a flavorful tour of the restaurants.

It wouldn’t be a complete stay in Los Cabos if I didn’t leave the property and go out to explore the area. I went to feed the dolphins at Cabo Dolphins located at the marina in Cabo San Lucas. It was so nice to be able to go into the water and get up close and personal with these little creatures!  I also enjoyed a nice cruise over to Land’s End, capitalizing on the beautiful sunset  that takes place only in Cabo.

The area also has some interesting shopping, and lots of good eateries. One of my favorites is Los Deseos Restaurant at the Marina. The chefs are Mexican born and raised, and come to your table to make an amazing tequila-tinged queso fundido (melted cheese). It’s made with three cheeses flamed table side in a volcanic rock, then doused with tequila and served in homemade tortillas.

Add in that many of the sea-facing balconies of the Hacienda Encantada are a perfect place to spot whales during whale migration season, there’s not much else you can ask for in a week!
