“It’s not a party where people come and post up, people come to dance”

Soul Summit Music is a DJ collective that have been throwing parties in Brooklyn parks since 2001.  They started Soul Summit Music Festival because they wanted to bring club music outdoors, for a couple of reasons.  First, the DJs felt soulful house music was getting the exposure it deserved. Tabu, of Soul Summit Music explains, “We chose to play music that was not being played on the radio”.  Also the DJs wanted to grow its audience by playing music for people who wouldn’t normally go clubs but would love dance music.  Apparently they were on to something because 15 years later the party has become a beloved institution.

At Soul Summit Music Festival you can expect to hear an eclectic array of dance music anything from soulful house, to neo-soul, to new jazz. They pride themselves on their extensive vinyl collections and playing rare cuts; dance music released on small labels, or records artists put out themselves.

Many Soul Summit Music fans harken back to the New York City’s clubbing hey day. They danced at Paradise Garage 80s and were members of house nation in the 90’s.    But the music attracts a younger crowd too, Tabu calls them “the dancers” and international contingent as well.

This year is Soul Summit Music Festival’s 15th anniversary and they are planning some special events July and Aug. to celebrate the milestone.

Our pick: the anniversary show Jul 10. in Fort Greene Park with nightlife club legends The Shelter.  Ptoe Sol will open the party and DJ Timmy Regisford, known for his 12 hour DJ sets, soulful vocals, deep African sounds headlines the birthday bash.   All park events are free.

Check out Soul Summit Festival on Facebook, for all of their events.

He’s dj’ed  at The Limelite, Studio 54(Virgin Islands), The Tunnel, was a resident at the Roxy, he even had a guest spot at the legendary Paradise Garage.    And if you’ve ever heard the Body and Soul Compilations you are familiar with his work.

718 sessions was born in Brooklyn in 2002 and has been a staple in the New York City party scene ever since.  Each Sunday evening, the 718 Sessions family hops on the soulful house train to go on a musical odyssey with Danny.   He explains his dj style,  ”My sets are long & the songs are connected, it’s very much a journey, even a collective journey party to party”

In the summer the party becomes an outdoor event. You’ll find them on The Roof at Output, cruisin’ down the Hudson, at the PS1 Warm Up  and closing the summer out  with a roller skating party at Prospect Park.   Danny plans to celebrate this season with some special parties “being my 45th year DJing, I plan to do a number of parties playing all 45′s, 7″ vinyl.  “ Stay tuned.
